Privacy statement

What data

  • Account: first name, email address, password (encrypted), language.
  • Study: level, programme, subjects, test dates, your questions and the explanations, photos of exercises and worked answers, grading results, pitfalls, cheat sheet, weekly timetable.
  • Recordings: lesson recordings with transcript and summary, and your answer to the consent question.
  • Community: @handle, display name, profile photo, bio, school, country, studies and subjects (each field with your own visibility), posts, comments, likes, followers, blocks, reports and private messages.
  • Age: when you start using the community we ask your date of birth. We only keep your birth year and an age band (under 16, 16-17, 18+), not the full date.
  • Payments: subscription, payments, invoices, your agreement to the terms and the withdrawal notice. Our payment service provider handles your bank details; we only see the status and the payment method.
  • Use and safety: estimated cost per AI request, number of devices, a shortened hash of your network (never a full IP address) and, for a trial, a hash of your email address and device to prevent abuse.
  • Cookies: see the cookie policy.

Why and on what basis

  • Providing the service (explanations, planner, timetable, recordings, community): performance of the contract.
  • Payments and invoices: performance of the contract and legal obligation (we keep invoices for 7 years).
  • Moderation, safety, protecting minors and preventing abuse: legitimate interest and, where required, legal obligation.
  • Service emails (welcome, payment, reminders): performance of the contract. Nudges and the message digest by email only if you turn them on.
  • Preferences, statistics and marketing cookies: only with your consent.

AI

For explanations, grading, reading a timetable, processing recordings and checking photos in the community, we send the necessary text or images to an AI service that works for us as a processor. It may not use your data for its own purposes. We send no more than needed: for videos only individual frames. No decisions about you are based on AI alone: you can have a community rejection reviewed by a person.

Online status and activity

StudySlim keeps track of when you are online and how active you are: minutes per day, the number of questions and photos, and which part of the app you had open last. We do this to keep the service working, prevent abuse and help you in time, for example just before a test. The content of your conversations and private messages is not part of this. We do not share this data with third parties. Activity data older than 12 months is deleted automatically.

After a test we ask how it went, which grade you expect and later your result; we only use these answers to help you better, you can switch the question off under Account, and they are deleted when you delete your account.

When you sign up we store the type of device, operating system, browser and country (coarse, from your browser language and time zone), for security and to improve the service; we do not store your IP address for this.

Community, minors and moderation

Under 16 the community is off (studying works as normal) unless a parent or guardian gives consent. Accounts of 16 and 17 year olds are private by default, are not shown in Discover, cannot receive messages from adults they do not follow, and their school is only visible to adults when they follow each other. Photos and videos are checked before others can see them. Texts pass an automatic filter. Private messages are only visible to you and the other person; moderators only see a message when someone reports it or the filter holds it, and only see a photo in a message to check it in advance. How long

  • Account and study data: as long as your account exists.
  • Recordings, transcripts and summaries: at most 3 months after upload unless you extend. Then deleted for real.
  • Deleted or rejected community content: at most 30 days in a protected bin for appeals, then deleted for real.
  • Activity (online status and minutes per day): at most 12 months.
  • Invoices and payment data: 7 years (legal obligation).
  • Cookie consent: 6 months in your browser; the log (without name or IP address) at most 2 years.

Who else sees it

Only processors we need: hosting (servers in the European Union), email delivery, the payment service provider and the AI service. We have agreements with them on security and confidentiality. We never sell your data.

Your rights

You can access, correct, download and delete your data. You can do this yourself under Account > My data (download as a file and delete your account). You can also object or ask us to restrict processing: email info@studyslim.com. We reply within a month. You can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).

Security

Connections are encrypted (https). Recordings, timetables, photos of exercises and private media are stored in a protected folder and can only be opened via a secure, expiring link. Version 2026-11.
